  1. The classical, aristocratic Japanese drama,
  2. which developed from the 14th to the 16th
  3. centuries and is still performed. There is a
  4. repertory of some 250 pieces, of which five,
  5. one from each of the several classes devoted
  6. to different subjects, may be put on in a
  7. performance lasting a whole day. Dance, mime,
  8. music, and chanting develop the mythical or
  9. historical themes. All the actors are men,
  10. some of whom wear masks and elaborate
  11. costumes; scenery is limited. No influenced
  12. kabuki drama. No developed from popular rural
  13. entertainments and religious performances
  14. staged at shrines and temples by travelling
  15. companies. The leader of one of these
  16. troupes, Kan'ami (1333-84), and his son and
  17. successor Zeami (1363-1443/4) wrote a number
  18. of No plays and are regarded as the founders
  19. of the form. The plots often feature a ghost
  20. or demon seeking rest or revenge, but the
  21. aesthetics are those of Zen Buddhism.
  22. Symbolism and suggestion take precedence over
  23. action, and the slow, stylized dance is the
  24. strongest element. Flute, drums, and chorus
  25. supply the music.
